Living Stories Workshop

SATURDAY, APRIL 7TH, 8:30 a.m. - 5:30 p.m.

img_0022.jpg What do you live for? What makes you feel alive? What do you want to wake up to this spring, the season of new beginnings?

Join veteran VOICES artists, Kimi Eisele and Josh Schachter, for the Living Stories Project. This one-day workshop in April invites you to reflect on these questions through creative writing, photography, and movement.

The project draws from VOICES’ best mentoring practices in multidisciplinary storytelling and new forms developed by Kimi and Josh. The project enacts VOICES’ mission to inspire Tucsonans to use the arts to explore their stories and to connect these stories to Tucson’s unique environment, history, and culture.

On Saturday, April 7, 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., you’ll be guided through activities in photography, creative writing, movement (Yes, dancing! But don’t be afraid, it’s easy) in order to remember and celebrate the joys in your life. You’ll be invited to tell your personal, family, tribal, and community stories and to create “life maps” highlighting experiences that have made you feel happy and alive.

The workshop is designed for people of all ages and abilities. No prior experience in writing, photography or dance is required. The workshop will help you express yourself in these areas.
By participating, you’ll learn:

• How to see in new ways
• How to use images to tell stories
• How to chart your life experiences
• How to use sensory details to enliven your writing
• How to use writing to help you tell your stories out loud
• How to create gestures
• How to use movement as a way to activate memory
• How to use movement to help you celebrate life experiences

Guest artists Kimi and Josh are the VOICES’ founding writing and photography directors ran the 110º After School Magazine Project, for five years. Both have gone on to conduct artist residencies in schools and cultural institutions in Tucson and across the country. Kimi has taught workshops and directed performances combining writing, the spoken word, and dance. Josh has taught photography and digital storytelling to youth and adults.
