June 15TH – July 9TH Photography 101

every Monday – Thursday // 9 am  to noon

Spend four weeks learning how to take artistic and well-composed creative photographs during this course.  Learn how to use the technical settings on a camera – ISO, shutter speed and aperture – to create photographs that reflect your artistic vision. Different styles of photography, including landscape, portraiture, abstract, fine art and photojournalism will be studied. All equipment is provided.  Limit of 20.

June 15TH – July 3rd Documentary Comics

every Monday – Friday // noon to 3 pm

Learn to combine words and pictures to create compelling non-fiction by exploring the art of sequential illustration, graphic storytelling, visual narration and plain ol’ comic book creation. Each participant, working alone and in teams, will learn how to share their unique voice by writing, drawing and publishing stories online.

June 15TH – June 26TH Humor Writing

every Monday – Friday // 3 to 5 pm

Do you like to tell funny real-life stories? If you think you have a strong sense of the absurd, and want to spend a couple of weeks laughing, writing humor essays and sharing them in a group, then this is your class!  We will examine the cultural ridiculousness inherent in stereotypes, learn to structure stories for the ultimate punch-line, and wallow in the art of incongruity. By studying the writing of humor we will create short, humorous pieces that may be recorded as radio segments or be printed as opinion editorials.

July 13TH – July 24TH Career Cards

every Monday – Friday // 9 – noon

Are you curious about non-traditional or unique careers? During this two-week workshop, you will interview and photograph Tucsonans who have nontraditional careers.  Your portrait and interview will be printed in full-color cards that will be distributed throughout the city.  The cards will also be published on Facebook.  A stipend of $100 will be awarded to workshop participants. Limit of 12 participants.

Opinion Writing June 15TH – June 26TH every Monday – Friday // 1 – 3 pm

Like to debate? Interested in politics and community issues?  See your name on the editorial page by signing up for the VOICES opinion writing course!  This two-week course is designed to teach you the skills you need to create logical, passionate arguments for newspaper opinion pages. Creating arguments is an art with a long history: rhetoric. By learning the tools of rhetoric, you’ll learn how to say what sometimes seems hard to explain (why you really think the voting age should be 16, or why Tucson should really do something about that “homeless problem”). Each youth will craft at least one opinion piece to be considered for publication in the Young Voices column of the Arizona Daily Star. What opinion you share is completely up to you!

Long-form Radio June 29TH – July 24TH

Every Monday – Friday , 2 – 4 pm, EXCEPT:

Wednesdays 2– 5 pm

Do you envision yourself romping through the desert, recording equipment in hand, hot on the trail of a story about…littering? Immigration? Suburban sprawl? Whatever your story focus, writing for the radio is an exciting way to challenge conventions of your everyday, five-paragraph-theme-English-class-writing-process. Writing for radio has its own rules. This 4-week course explores storytelling on the radio and will teach you everything you need to know to share your experiences with radio listeners. Each youth will create one long-form (10 minute or longer) radio story that will be considered for broadcast at either 91.3 KXCI, 89.1 KUAZ, or on the VOICES website. Stories can be about whatever you choose!
