There can be countless reasons why an established actor, or an up and coming actor needs to improve his or her voice.
Perhaps there’s an audition coming up next week. Perhaps there’s a broadway show they’re trying to get into. The scenarios are endless.
If you’re in this particular situation, the first thing that came to my mind is that you either need some really quick tips for instant improvement, or you really want to work on your overall singing and improve your voice from the ground up. Also, it’s worth keeping in mind that there are no special techniques or exercises specifically for actors.
So with that in mind, I have found a video on vocal exercises that actors can use right now to improve their voices very quickly, and more information below for those who want to continue on learning more.
How To Improve Your Voice in 5 Minutes – Video
One quick exercise that actors can start with is "Zs", as described in the video above.
The reason this is a good exercise is that you can almost do it anywhere. Often times actors are extremely busy and don't have time to sit down and prep an area for these quick exercises, so this one is good for that.
The main point here is that you want to try and eliminate any tension in your face.
It's really the quickest way to get better results. Lose the tension, and you'll sing better no matter what.
As you scale up your Zs as described in the video, you'll start to have a much more free following voice. Consider practicing this for 3 to 5 minutes every day.
Benefits of Singing Lessons for Actors
I would imagine that being able to sing is just another tool in every actor's toolbox.
Those who can sing, will no doubt be at an advantage in some way.
Because of this, taking the right steps to improve your voice can be extremely helpful for your overall career.
And just to make the point more clear, here is a list of a few famous actors who have worked hard on their voices:
- Kate Hudson
- Jennifer Lawrence
- Robert Downy Jr.
- Kate Winslet
- Scarlett Johansson
And the list goes on.
These actors have amazing voices, but they weren't necessarily born with them.
Many of them either took lessons or made it a priority to practice singing.
